بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد
One
misconception which some people like to spread is:
“We
should hate the sin (i.e. the action) and not the sinner (i.e. the one who does
it).”
“We
should hate the evil and not the evildoer.”
“We
should hate the crime and not the criminal.”
Firstly,
those who say the above have no evidence to support their claim. Moreover, if
the above was true, then its opposite should also be true:
“We
should love the good deeds and not the one who does it.”
But
this doesn’t make sense, does it?!
Furthermore,
it is not for us to define the rules. The rules have already been defined and
explained in the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger:
Narrated
Abu Umamah: The Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم said:
❝Whoever LOVES for the sake of
Allaah, and HATES for the sake of Allaah, and GIVES for the sake of Allaah and WITHHOLDS
for the sake of Allaah, he will have perfect faith.❞
[Sunan
Abu Dawood (4681) and Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2521) from the Hadeeth of Mu`aadh Ibn
Anas and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee due to supporting chains]
Still
furthermore, where Allaah تعالى says in regards to the ACTION…
﴿وَاللَّـهُ لَا يُحِبُّ
الْفَسَادَ﴾
{…and
Allaah likes not FASAAD (mischief)} [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 205]
…Allaah
تعالى also mentions
about its DOER:
﴿وَاللَّـهُ لَا يُحِبُّ
الْمُفْسِدِينَ﴾
{…and Allaah does not like the MUFSIDOON (mischief-makers)} [Surah al-Maa’idah
(5): 64]
And
there are more Aayaat:
{Allaah does not like the transgressors} [Surah
al-Baqarah (2): 190]
{Allaah does not like the sinning disbeliever} [Surah
al-Baqarah (2): 276]
{Allaah does not like the Dhaalimoon (wrong-doers)} [Surah
aal-`Imraan (3): 57, 140]
{Allaah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful} {Surah
al-Nisaa’ (4): 36]
And
the list goes on…
Rather
the final nail in the coffin is the following Aayah:
﴿لَّا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا
يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّـهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّـهَ
وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ
أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ ۚ
أُولَـٰئِكَ كَتَبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْإِيمَانَ وَأَيَّدَهُم بِرُوحٍ مِّنْهُ﴾
{You will NOT find any people who believe in Allaah and the Last
Day, LOVING those who OPPOSE Allaah and His Messenger, even though they were
their FATHERS or their SONS, or their BROTHERS, or their KINDRED. For such He
has written Faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with Rooh from
Himself…} [Surah
al-Mujaadilah (58): 22]

The
following are a few more Ahaadeeth to confirm the types/categories of people
that Allaah تعالى loves or hates:
HADEETH
#1 (Those who hate the Ansaar):
Narrated
Al-Bara Ibn `Aazib: I heard the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saying:
❝None loves the Ansar but a
believer, and none hates them but a hypocrite. So Allaah will love him who
loves them, and He will hate him who hates them.❞
[Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (3783) and Saheeh Muslim (138)]
HADEETH
#2 (Those who love to meet Allaah and those who hate to meet Allaah):
Narrated
`Ubaadah bin As-Saamit: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
❝Who-ever loves to meet Allaah,
Allaah (too) loves to meet him and who-ever hates to meet Allaah, Allaah (too)
hates to meet him.❞ `Aaishah, or some
of the wives of the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم said: “But we dislike death.” He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ❝It
is not like this, but it is meant that when the time of the death of a believer
approaches, he receives the good news of Allaah’s pleasure with him and His
blessings upon him, and so at that time nothing is dearer to him than what is
in front of him. He therefore loves the meeting with Allaah, and Allaah (too)
loves the meeting with him. But when the time of the death of a disbeliever
approaches, he receives the evil news of Allaah’s torment and His Requital,
whereupon nothing is more hateful to him than what is before him. Therefore, he
hates the meeting with Allaah, and Allaah too, hates the meeting with him.❞
[Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (6507, 6508, 7504) and Saheeh Muslim (6486, 6488, 6490, 6492,
6494). It is also reported from Abu Hurairah and Abu Moosaa رضي الله عنهما]
HADEETH
#3 (the swearing merchant, the arrogant poor man and the boasting miser):
Narrated
Abu Darr that the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم said:
❝There are three (types of
people) whom Allaah loves and three (types of people) whom Allaah hates…
And those whom Allaah hates are:
1) the merchant who takes (false) oaths;
2) the arrogant poor man;
3) and the miser who reminds the people (of the favors he has
done for them or the things which he has given them).❞
[Musnad
of Imaam Ahmad (21340) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Saheeh
al-Jaami` (3074)]
Narrated
Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
❝When Allaah loves a slave, He
calls Jibreel (Gabriel) and says: {I love so-and-so; so love him.} And then
Jibreel loves him. Then he (Jibreel) announces in the heavens saying: “Allaah
loves so-and-so, so love him”; then the inhabitants of the heavens (i.e. the
angels) also love him; and then people on earth love him. And when Allaah hates
a slave, He calls Jibreel and says: {I hate so- and-so, so hate him.} Then
Jibreel also hates him. He (Jibreel) then announces amongst the inhabitants of
heavens: “Verily, Allaah hates so- and-so, so you also hate him.” Thus they
also start to hate him. Then he becomes the object of hatred on the earth also.❞
[Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (3209, 6040) and Saheeh Muslim (6373) and the wordings are his]

Part 3
The
Law of Greater INEQUALITY:
Aayah
#1.
Allaah
تعالى says:
{Shall We treat those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah,
Tawheed) and do righteous good deeds, as Mufsidoon (those who associate
partners in worship with Allaah and commit crimes) on earth? Or shall We treat
the Muttaqoon (pious) as Fujjaar (criminals, disbelievers, wicked, etc)?} [Surah Saad
(38): 28]
The
worst type is when some of the people try to Equate:
۞ Between Allaah and
other false “gods”;
۞ Between Islaam and
other false religions;
۞ Between Sunnah and
Bid`ah;
۞ Between the Tayyib (the
good) and the Khabeeth (bad);
۞ Between the Muslimeen
and the Mujrimeen (those who associate others with Allaah in worship);
۞ Between the Mu’mineen
and the Faasiqeen (disobedient);
۞ Between the Muttaqeen
(pious) and the Fujjaar (wicked);
۞ Between the Muhsineen
(those who do good deeds) and the Mufsideen (evil doers);
۞ Between the one who is
seeing and hearing and between the one who is blind and deaf.
۞ Between the living and
the dead.

There
is no comparison between a Muslim (who worships Allaah alone) and a non-Muslim:
Aayah
#2.
{And honor belong to Allaah, His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), and to
the believers, but the hypocrites know not.} [Surah al-Munaafiqoon (63):8]
Aayah
#3.
{Or do those who earn evil deeds think that We shall hold them
equal with those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah) and do righteous good
deeds, (make them equal) in their present life and after their death? Worst is
the judgement that they make.} [Surah al-Jaathiyah (45): 21]
Aayah
#4.
{Is then he who is a believer like him who is a Faasiq
(disbeliever and disobedient to Allaah)? Not equal are they.} [Surah
al-Sajdah (32): 18]
Aayah
#5.
{Shall We then treat the (submitting) Muslims like the Mujrimoon
(criminals, polytheists and disbelievers, etc.)? What is [the matter] with you?
How do you judge?} [Surah al-Qalam (68): 35-36]

Part 4
Our
love and hatred for someone or something should be in moderation.
Narration #1
Muhammad
bin Seereen narrated from Abu Hurairah - and I think he narrated it from the
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم who said:
❝Love your beloved moderately,
perhaps he becomes hated to you someday. And hate whom you hate moderately,
perhaps he becomes your beloved someday.❞
[Sunan
al-Tirmidhee (1997) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee, and graded as
“Hasan” by Shaikh Zubair `Alee Zai. Also reported in al-Adab al-Mufrad (1321)
as a statement of `Alee رضي
الله عنه and it is graded as “Hasan li ghairihee” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]
Narration
#2
Aslam
said: `Umar ibn al-Khattaab رضي
الله عنه said:
❝Do not let your love be a total
infatuation. Do not let your anger be destruction.❞
I
asked: “How is that?” He replied: ❝It
is when you love someone, you are infatuated like a child, and when you hate,
you desire destruction for your companion.❞
[al-Adab
al-Mufrad (1322) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Part 5
Our
hatred towards someone should not prevent us from doing justice. Our hatred
towards someone should not prevent us from being kind, from doing the right
thing, from giving them their rights.
We
have many examples in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah.
From
The Qur’aan:
a) Ibraaheem’s
عليه السلام father was a Kaafir, yet that still did
not prevent Ibraaheem عليه السلام from addressing him with kindness.
b) Allaah
تعالى enjoined upon us to be dutiful and good
towards our parents even if they are Kaafir. We are not even allowed to say a
word of disrespect to them. The only time we are not allowed to obey them is
when it involves the disobedience to Allaah.
c) When
Allaah تعالى asked Moosaa and Haroon عليهم السلام to go to Fir`aun (Pharaoh), He تعالى told them to speak with him in gentle
manner that perhaps he may accept the admonition or fear Allaah. [Surah TaHa
(20): 42-44]
d) Allaah
تعالى also informs us:
{Allaah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those
who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of
your homes. Verily, Allaah loves those who deal with equity.} [Surah
al-Mumtahanah (60): 8]
e) Allaah
تعالى also says:
{…and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid
justice.} [Surah
al-Maaidah (5): 8]
From
the Sunnah:
f) The
Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم died while his armor
was mortgaged to a Jew for thirty Saa` (measures) of barley. [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree]
g) A
bier had passed by the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and he stood up for it. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was informed that it is bier of a Jew, to
which the he صلى الله عليه وسلم remarked: ❝Isn’t
he a human being (or did he not have a soul)?❞ [Saheeh Muslim:
chapter standing for funerals]
h) In
the Hadeeth it is reported that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم talked
about war prisoners of Badr saying: ❝Had
al-Mut`im bin `Adee been alive and interceded with me for these mean people, I
would have freed them for his sake.❞ [Saheeh
al-Bukhaaree (3139, 4024)]
Al-Mut`im
was a Kaafir who had done a favor to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. He had given shelter to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم when he returned to Makkah from Taaif.
Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said that in this Hadeeth there is
encouragement to repay/reward those who do good even if they are Kaafir.

Part 6
How to treat a Muslim who has committed an act of
disobedience?
Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaymeen رحمه الله said:
“If a Believer possesses
Imaan, but he is also guilty of committing an act of disobedience, then we
treat him with friendship due to his Imaan, while we dislike him due to his
acts of disobedience. This is something common in our lives. [Translator’s
Note: (A disobedient Muslim is like an unpleasant tasting medicine)]. You might
take the medicine which has an unpleasant taste that you dislike, but in spite
of this, you take it willingly, because there is a cure in it for the illness.
Some people hate a sinning
Believer more than they hate a Kaafir (disbeliever). This is a strange thing,
and it should be the opposite of what should be, because the Kaafir is an enemy
of Allaah, His Messenger and the Believers. So it is incumbent upon us to hate
the Kaafir with all our hearts…”
