It is due upon us that we supplicate for the rulers:

بسم الله والحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله ، وبعد

1. If our Muslim brothers deserve our supplications, then the Muslim rulers have precedence over all the others.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Religion is sincerity (Al-Naseehah), religion is sincerity, religion is sincerity.” They said: ‘To whom, O Messenger of Allaah?’ He said: “To Allaah, to His Book, to His Messenger, TO THE IMAAMS OF THE MUSLIMS and to their common folk.” [Saheeh Muslim (661)]

In this Hadeeth the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned the Imaams (rulers and scholars) before the general public.

2. By our supplications to Allaah for the rulers, we will achieve what the swords and guns fail to achieve.

Narrated Abu al-Dardaa’: Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم used to say: “The supplication of a Muslim for his brother at his back (in his absence) is responded so long as he makes a supplication for blessings for his brother and the commissioned Angel says: Ameen, and says: May it be for you too!” [Saheeh Muslim (4920)]

3. If the rulers are guided, then there is only benefit for the Bilaad (land) and `Ibaad (people); whereas rebellion only causes Fitnah and Fasaad.

Fudhail Ibn `Iyyaadh said: If I had a Du`aa which I know is going to be answered, then I would make it in favor of the ruler. He was asked to explain it. He said: If I supplicate for myself, then it will not go beyond me (i.e. it will be limited for me only), but if I pray for the rectification of the ruler, then his rectification will rectify the people and the land. [Sharh al-Sunnah of al-Barbahaaree and Hilyatul Awliyaa’]

4. By making Du`aa to Allaah that Allaah guides the rulers and aids them in truth, one is relying on Allaah instead of his own abilities.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The best of your rulers are those whom you love and who love you, and those who supplicate Allah in your favor and you supplicate Allaah in their favor…” [Saheeh Muslim]

5. Or is that you have bad thought about Allaah, that He will not answer your call? Or is that you have bad thoughts about Allaah, that He will not fulfill His promise? Or is that you have bad thought about Allaah that your might is better than your supplication?
