Loving the Kuffaar?!

To all the brothers who have been praising the Kuffaar (sports personalities, film celebrities etc.) for their achievements, calling them legends or feeling sorrow upon their death:

Know that your love and hate should be for the sake of Allaah تعالى. This is what the Tawheed demands from us.

Helping a Kaafir to fulfill his needs, dealing justly and kindly with him is one thing, but praising him or showing affection towards him is not allowed (even for worldly reasons) while he is mocking at Allaah and associating partners with Him.

*The Kuffaar and Mushriks are the worst creatures.

{Verily, those who disbelieve (in the religion of Islaam, the Qur’aan and Prophet Muhammad) from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al-Mushrikun will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures.} [Surah al-Bayyinah (98): 6]

*How can we show our affection towards them?!
*Whoever does that has been misguided.

{O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth, and have driven out the Messenger and yourselves (from your homeland) because you believe in Allaah your Lord! If you have come forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take not these disbelievers and polytheists, etc., as your friends). You show friendship to them in secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray, (away) from the Straight Path.} [Surah al-Mumtahinah (60): 1]

*We have the best example in Ibraaheem
*Our hostility should continue till they submit themselves to Allaah.
* Till then we should free ourselves from them.

{Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibraaheem and those with him, when they said to their people: “Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allaah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allaah Alone.”} [Surah al-Mumtahinah (60): 4]

**There were many Kuffaar at the time of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, but never did he ever praise a single Kaafir.

  1. He praised one kuffaar that i know. Namely Mut‘im ibn ‘Adi, because the same Mut‘im ibn ‘Adi gave him (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) protection after he couldnt return to Makkah.

    Narrated Jubair bin Mut`im:

"The Prophet talked about war prisoners of Badr saying, "Had Al-Mut`im bin Adi been alive and interceded with me for these mean people, I would have freed them for his sake."

Book: One-fifth of Booty to the Cause of Allah (Khumus) -
    Global Id: 3015 (4)
    Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3139
    In-book reference: Book 57, Hadith 47
English translation: Vol. 4, Book 53, Hadith 367

He praised him, and said, that if Mut`im bin Adi, requested the prisoners back, he would give them for his sake. He also made a dua, with the permission of Allah, for his uncle Abu Talib, who also died a Kuffar.

What i want to say is, that not all of "Kuffaar" are bad, some of them are used by Allah Mighty and Sublime, to protect Islam, and to spread Islam. So we should recognize the good people, among the Kuffaar, and approach them, and convey the message, make dua, and leave everything else with Allah, and his Power and Might. A great example of what I am saying is, Muhammad Ali, and how the message was conveyed through his reversion, by the Will of Allah.

Whatever i said, that is correct, is from the Mercy of Allah, and whatever I said that is wrong, is from me and the shaytan the accursed.

And Allah knows best, Glorious is the Lord of the Worlds.

    1. Assalaam `alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Baarak Allaahu feek akhi, by praise I mean, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم never said about the Mushriks and Kuffaar that so-and-so is a good man. Even in the case of al-Mut`im, he did not praise him, but only wanted to repay for him for his act of kindness.

As for al-Mut`im, then he did a favor for the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and Islaam, but the present day sports personalities play for their personal achievements and the film celebrities act for wealth and fame – all this is personal. A person might score a hundred goals in his career, or might win many Oscars in his lifetime, but that does not benefit Islaam a bit. Calling them legends, while Allaah تعالى refers to them as worst of creatures!

Moreover, the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم prayed for his uncle before his death. He did not pray for him after his death when it became clear that his uncle died upon Kufr.

Anyways, I agree with you that not all the Kuffaar are the same. Some of them have a few good habits and are generous and kind and have helped Islaam in many ways. So we in return, should be generous to them, but that still does not mean that we should praise them, more than what they deserve.

Jazaak Allaahu khair for the Hadeeth, and here is some benefit from the statement of Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله regarding it:
